When I decided to sell the home where I raised my two sons and move from the suburbs to a downtown loft in Sacramento, California, I was ready to deal with items from my past. I had already discarded many items of a past life when I packed up and moved into my new home. I did not realize that I had just started my tidying journey. My life was in transition. My sons started their own lives; I had a new man in my life and I left my job of 15 years in the video gaming industry.
I was sitting in my son’s tiny apartment in Chelsea, New York City, which he shared with his girlfriend. While drinking wine and eating catchucherie, we chatted about my journey and all the exciting new events in my life. Both at the same time asked me if I had read Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. I had never heard of it. We ventured to a bookstore the next day to pick up a copy which I read and could not put down on the flight home.
I was very intrigued by the concept of spark joy although I was not quite sure how I would know what items do spark joy in my home. This powerful book and method started me on a journey I did not see coming. I was sold. I ventured on the journey on my own; I do not believe that there were any certified consultants at the time. My journey took more than a year but it was thorough and life-changing. I reaped the benefits very quickly and still do today.
